Rosie Winstead
Biography
Rosie Winstead is the sixth of nine children and comes from a large extended family. "I can't remember a time where I wasn't surrounded by siblings or cousins," she says. "Our family used to take up an entire church pew at church, where we kids were all given a pencil and paper in hand to keep us quiet. The favorite subject for all of us was to draw our family, smallest to biggest, lined up in a row.
"Over time the line-up changed, adding babies, or other details, like big ears on my dad and certain funny expressions," she continues. "In some ways, the challenge for me is still to capture that kind of subtle, quirky humor I loved as a little girl. I want each story and illustration to be straightforward and simple, yet suggest subtle complexities through details, whether it be a certain gesture or something funny happening in the background. The unselfconscious grace and confidence of children intrigues and inspires me. Their complete trust in the world and the confidence they will surely live forever, are attributes I like to depict in my characters and stories."
An author and artist, Rosie lives in Springfield, Missouri with her husband, Patrick. Besides writing and drawing she loves to go to flea markets, rearrange her house, and hang out and laugh with her family.
