Valiska Gregory

Biography

Award-winning poet and children's book author Valiska Gregory has published over a dozen books for children. According to reviewers, her work ranges from picture and chapter books full of "kid pleasing humor and plenty of action" to poignant books for all ages that are "told with a contagious sense of wonder." Her books have been called both "shining and magical" with "language and phrasing...as pleasing to the ear as the story is to the heart."

Translated in seven different languages, Valiska's books have received Parents' Choice Awards, been included in the American Booksellers' "Pick of the Lists," appeared on many state award lists, and featured on television. Reference source Something About the Author calls her "star in the children's literature scene."

Valiska enjoys speaking at schools, libraries, and conferences across the country, and she regularly reviews children's books for Publishers Weekly. She grew up in an immigrant neighborhood in Chicago, received her Master's degree from the University of Chicago, taught every grade from kindergarten to seniors in college, and is currently Writer-in-residence at Butler University where she directs the annual Butler University Children's Literature Conference. She has two grown daughters and lives with her husband, a university professor, in Indianapolis.
